Recent real-world developments including the increased reliance on renewable power generation and a changing political landscape have increased corporate demand for environmental risk management. This position represents a tremendous opportunity for someone looking to work with industry experts on cutting edge projects. The candidate will work as part of the Speedwell Weather Data and Speedwell Settlement Services teams. As part of a small team daily efforts will involve a wide range of activities… operational data processing, responding to client requests, project specific data analysis, product deliveries, and research and development.

Job Role

The candidate will assist with team activities. Specific responsibilities will depend upon the individual’s skillset, corporate needs, and the candidate’s passion.

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Operational data quality control
  • Data certification for financial contract settlement
  • Client support
  • Product / data preparation and delivery
  • Research and development

Required Skills/Experience

  • Master’s degree in meteorology (or related science) and/or industry experience
  • Experience working with meteorological / environmental observations
  • Strong background in statistics
  • The individual is expected to have good communication (written and oral) skills.
  • Ability to work in a small team using your own initiative

Desirable Skills/Experience

  • Experience with ArcGIS for data visualization
  • Experience using programming/scripting languages or software to handle common file types used in meteorological data sets (grib, NetCDF, csv, etc.)
  • Foreign language skills (specifically Spanish)
  • Experience working with and installing meteorological instrumentation
  • Ability to focus on detail
  • Experience with the insurance / finance industry or weather risk management
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following programming/scripting languages: Python, FORTRAN, MATLAB.

The candidate will work alongside teams at Speedwell Weather and Speedwell Settlement Services to develop / improve systems used for client deliverables. Efforts will initially focus on the manipulation / analysis of meteorological data but will include other climate variables as our business expands further into the climate / renewables sectors. This position allows a unique opportunity to work with the projects side of the business with a continuous stream of changing requirements based upon client needs.

This position will report directly to the Chief Technical Officer as well as working closely with the Co-CEO and Director of Operations.

Job Role

The candidate will design and perform extensive statistical data analysis.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Develop new software to automate parametric data cleaning such as: rain, snow, wind, hurricane, sea level data, etc. Ensure the integrity of this software by using unit testing and strict source code version control.
  • Review and recommend options to improve.
    • Data cleaning systems
    • Forecast downscaling / unbiasing techniques.
  • Develop project-based models for data quality control as related to Settlement Data.
  • Support the configuration and running of
    • Forecast
    • WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting model)
    • Gridded dataset calculations

Experience

Required Skills

Candidates must have several years of experience working with the following:

  • C#
  • Python
  • Excel

Higher Diploma or Degree in Applied Mathematics or similar (actuary/quantitative finance) is also required.
