Job Description

This is an opportunity for the candidate to be involved in the continued development of a major new weather risk trading platform which pulls together our existing resources of weather data and forecasts, weather risk pricing software and messaging. The platform transforms the way that weather risk products and alerts are made available to the market.

Based in our UK office in Harpenden (Hertfordshire) we are looking for a front-end web developer to support and develop this new strategically-significant website which builds upon and expands our product offering. This will involve:

  • Design innovative user interfaces
  • Work with API/web services to in-house weather-risk pricing and risk management systems to present tabular and graphical information in a meaningful way
  • Steering the design of new and existing Speedwell websites, adopting best practices and latest technologies
  • Considering security implications when working with financially sensitive information
  • Create effective testing strategies

Duties and responsibilities

The Primary responsibilities are as follows:

  • Assist in the continued design and development of a major platform integrating Speedwell's current and future products
  • Design innovative user interfaces
  • Work with API/web services of an in-house weather-risk pricing and risk management systems to present tabular and graphical information in a meaningful way
  • Steer the design of new and existing Speedwell websites, adopting best practices and latest technologies

Junior Meteorologist

Speedwell Weather currently have a vacancy for a qualified meteorologist to join their UK based team in Harpenden. The team of meteorologists provide expertise in a range of weather topics as well as support to a wide range of clients, who are mainly concerned with weather risk management in energy, agriculture, commodity, Insurance and weather-risk-hedging sectors.

About the Person

The candidate will be a newly or recently qualified in a suitable subject field (see essential requirements below), looking to join a dynamic team of specialists within a small company environment. Individuals who meet the requirements listed and are able to demonstrate a degree of independent thinking and high quality analytical skills will be considered.

Requirements

Essential requirements:

  1. A University degree in a related discipline such as Meteorology, Agro-meteorology, Oceanography, and hydro-meteorology – other Environmental Sciences including agronomy related studies may also be considered.
  2. Be able to demonstrate good analytical skills and an enquiring mind when dealing with numerical series.
  3. Be able to demonstrate competency in use of Microsoft Office software, especially Excel spreadsheet package which is used extensively in our day to day work.
  4. Have a sound mathematical background with particular emphasis on statistics.
  5. Be able to demonstrate strong communication skills, in particular be able to describe meteorological information using both professional terminology as well more common terms when dealing with clients.
  6. Have a willingness to relocate or be prepared to travel to our Harpenden offices.
  7. Be prepared to travel overseas attending client meetings, conferences and trade fairs.
  8. Experience of using meteorological forecast models, including operational, ensemble and statistical models from the primary global modelling centres.
  9. Have an understanding of WMO coding standards and reporting formats – SYNOP, METAR, BUFR, GRIB etc.

Desirable requirements:

  1. Be able to hold a conversation in a second language – Speedwell have clients and suppliers from many non-English speaking countries around the world as we are a global business.
  2. Proficient in using a GIS software package to analyse weather data series and produce powerful graphic rich reports.
  3. Experience in weather instrument installation and/or calibration.

Main responsibilities
  1. As a member of the Data Team, perform routine quality control checks and cleaning of real-time observed weather data.
  2. Analysing, quality controlling and cleaning historical data series to a standard where they can be used to price financial weather derivative and insurance contracts.
  3. Researching, collating and documenting weather station metadata details in order to better inform clients and end users about how measurements have changed over time.
  4. Provide prompt replies to client enquiries regarding weather data and forecast products in order to facilitate an active market place for weather based contracts.
  5. Write original commentary of real-time weather events where there may be significant impact upon a weather derivative or weather risk based activity.
  6. Produce final Settlement-Quality weather data in order that clients may settle weather risk contracts.
  7. Produce written summaries on weather data related topics, typically these take the form of quality assurance reports referring to various weather data or re-analysis datasets.
  8. Assist all teams within the business with sales and marketing materials and insight, assist in the writing of specifications for our internal development and IT teams to work from.
  9. Carry out site surveys and install suitable weather instruments in response to client’s requirements.

Senior In-House Lawyer

About the Person

The Candidate will be a qualified lawyer with experience of commerce and a familiarity with financial markets and regulatory matters. The Candidate needs to be able to operate at a senior and strategic role both within the Company and in interactions with clients.

Reporting Lines

In the first instance the Candidate will report to Stephen Doherty, Chairman who is based in the UK office. The role is however a senior role and will involve interacting flexibly with the other directors individually and at a board level. The Candidate will be expected to assist in legal matters across the Speedwell business in all subsidiaries in the UK and US.

Location

The position is based in Harpenden, Hertfordshire It is possible that the job will require some foreign travel, for example, in relation to negotiations with major clients or to attend conferences or visiting other Company premises.

Responsibilities
  • Working with the directors to implement the Company’s strategic aims. The Company sees the role not as simply a matter of delivering legal documents to its requirements but of also being involved strategically to ensure that the business is driven in such a way as to deliver the products we want in a legally and regulatorily expedient matter
  • Working with existing external legal specialists and co-ordinating and interpreting their outputs
  • Establishing relationships with additional external legal specialists as may be required
  • Implementing systems to satisfy the Company’s FCA reporting obligations and advising the Company of its obligations as those regulations change
  • Pursuing new regulatory permissions for the Company both within the FCA and in other jurisdictions in the future

C# .NET Software Engineer

The candidate will be managed by Dr Michael Moreno, Chief Technical Architect, in a team of six talented developers.

The person should want to work for a smaller business where the opportunity exists to stamp their expertise in a variety of areas including SWS, weather forecasting, weather data cleaning, development of analytical tools, and consultancy.
